The county town on the Great Ouse — Victorian terraces around the Embankment and Castle Road, town-centre flats, and postwar suburbs out toward Brickhill and Goldington. Riverside streets and one-way loops need the van placed with a bit of thought.
Bedford’s neighbour to the south-west — a broad mix of interwar and modern estates off the Bedford Road, mostly kind driveways with the odd tight close.

The roads we work
Bedfordshire is defined by its through-roads. The M1 runs up the west side with junctions 11 to 13 serving Dunstable, the Leighton Buzzard side and the Bedford link; the A1 carries the east of the county past Biggleswade and Sandy; and the A6, A421, A428 and A5 stitch it all together. Knowing how they flow — and where they clog — is half of getting a move to run to time, whether it is a cross-town hop or the first leg of a run to Europe.
